The game was played at Players Park in Roscoe due to heavy flooding at the Thunder’s everyday stadium at Sportscore One in Rockford. The game was called after two rain delays combined for 38 minutes of down time, and game officials deemed that lightning in the area would keep the game suspended for a considerable amount of time.
Friday’s game will be played as scheduled, at 6:35 pm in Roscoe. Players Park is located at 5444 Swanson Road, just east of the Swanson-Illinois 251 intersection.
Cassidy Scoggins (3-1) gave up just two hits and one earned run in a five-inning complete game, while striking out five and walking none. Taking the mound for the Dutch was Judith van Kampen, who gave up three earned runs in two-thirds of an inning to take the loss.
The Thunder took charge early, when three walks and a hit batter walked in a run and loaded the bases for Lindsay Gardner. The Thunder infielder sent the ball into the outfield, driving Tonya Callahan and Shanna Diller in to put Rockford up 3-0 after one inning. Gardner drove Diller in for a second time in the third when Gardner doubled with Diller on second base after a leadoff walk.
The Dutch nationals scored their lone run on a long Saskia Kosterink homer to center field in the fourth inning.
The two teams will meet again on Friday at Players Park, as well as play a double-header Saturday in Roscoe. Each game’s tickets are $5 at the door, and fans can purchase a two-game double-header pass for Saturday’s games for just $8.
