ROSEMONT, IL (June 30, 2018) — Sierra Romero continued her strong start to the 2018 campaign and guided the USSSA Pride to a 3-2 win Saturday night at Parkway Bank Sports Complex. The third-year second baseman smacked a solo shot in the opening frame, a game-tying triple in the fifth and an eventual game-winning single in the seventh as the Pride forced a rubber match in the three-game series.
The Bandits (19-4) managed to steady the ship after Romero’s early contribution and temporarily took a 2-1 lead after run-scoring hits by Brenna Moss and Courtney Gano in the third.
However, Romero’s bat undid a strong start by Shelby Turnier, who was saddled with a no-decision after the right-hander worked 4.1 innings in the circle, allowing just one run on two hits. Coley Ries entered in relief but surrendered the game-tying triple before settling in for a steady performance out of the bullpen. The former Texas Charge standout tossed 1.2 innings before handing the ball to Ally Carda. The right-hander battled pitch-for-pitch against USSSA’s Paige Parker, but Romero tagged her for the go-ahead, two-out single in the seventh.
Parker, in her professional debut, collected her first win after delivering 3.2 strong innings of relief work. The two-time national champion at Oklahoma scattered three hits and did not allow a run.
Veteran southpaw Keilani Ricketts earned the save, her first of the 2018 season, after inducing a groundout off the bat of Sammy Marshall to end the game. Carda suffered the loss and fell to 3-1 on the season.
The Pride improved to 17-1 with the win. The two teams will conclude their three-game set at 1:05 p.m. Sunday at Parkway Bank Sports Complex. The series finale will be broadcast via NPFTV.
