Pride Defeat Spirit in Season Opener
VIERA, FL May 30, 2018– The USSSA Pride throttled past the Aussie Spirit on Wednesday night in their home opener at Space Coast Stadium. USSSA exploded in an offensive frenzy to beat the Spirit 13-1.
In the circle, Delanie Gourley got her first start and first win for the Pride. She gave two hits, one earned run and struck out four in four innings of work. Jolene Henderson came in for the last three innings, only allowing one hit while striking out three.
Sierra Romero got the offense going in the first when her double to right center scored Megan Wiggins for the first run of the game. She continued her great performance at the plate going three for four with a single, double, and triple just barely missing the cycle. Romero was named the Vaultz Lock it Up Player of the Game for her efforts.
The Pride notched three homeruns on the evening with long balls recorded by Lauren Chamberlain, Bianka Bell and Megan Wiggins. The Pride recorded 11 hits on the game led by the top three hitters in the lineup—Wiggins, Allexis Bennett-Romero—who went a combined 7-12 with 8 runs scored.
The Pride broke through the score in the bottom of the first, when Romero drove Megan Wiggins to put USSSA ahead, 1-0. Entering the second with a two-run lead, the Pride burst again with another seven runs including a homerun by Chamberlain.
Aussie Spirit answered back scoring a run off a wild pitch by Gourley, but the Pride responded with an additional four runs to increase the lead to 12-1. The Pride added one more in the bottom of the sixth with Wiggins solo shot. Wiggins finished the game 2-3 with four runs scored from the leadoff spot.
