DENVER, COLO. – The Cincinnati Reds will host National Pro Fastpitch on Wednesday (July 23). The 2003 NPF All-Star Team will sign autographs and participate in pre-game ceremonies prior to the MLB team’s 7:10 pm game with the Pittsburgh Pirates at Great American Ball Park.
The Reds will also stage a 9 a.m. clinic on Wednesday at Great American Ball Park for 100 girls (ages 8-16). In addition to the NPF All-Stars teaching all levels of softball skills, clinic participants will receive hands-on pitching instruction from pitcher Amy Kyler. A Cleveland State product from Marshallville, Ohio, Kyler pitched two seasons for the Akron Racers in the Women’s Pro Softball League.
The NPF Tour moves to Akron this weekend as the traveling All-Star team plays a single game Friday (July 25) followed by a doubleheader Saturday (July 26).
In addition to the three games, the NPF All-Stars will participate in a clinic Friday while appearing the next day at the Fastpitch Expo and a College Recruiting Seminar, presented by The National Scouting Report.
The 2003 NPF All-Star Tour is part of a nation-wide circuit for the collection of top collegiate and professional softball players that will end their 17-city this summer at Houston’s Minute Maid Park August 9. The NPF All-Star Tour partners with Major League Baseball clubs in 12 cities, including San Francisco, Minneapolis, Milwaukee, Detroit, Denver, Miami, Atlanta, Phoenix, Chicago, Cincinnati, Boston and Houston. Official league play is scheduled to begin early summer, 2004.
National Pro Fastpitch is the only professional women’s fastpitch softball league in the United States. Major League Baseball is the Official Development Partner of NPF. The league is headquartered in Denver, and has been in operation since 1997 under the names Women’s Pro Fastpitch (WPF) and Women’s Professional Softball League (WPSL).
“We’ve assembled a great group of top-notch athletes for our All-Star team and we’re excited about the competition we’ll meet while on tour. Our partnership with Major League Baseball gives us a great opportunity to bring fastpitch action to baseball and softball fans alike and really show what women can do on the diamond,” said Rich Levine, President and CEO of National Pro Fastpitch.
