With the recent announcement of the official six team schedule for the inaugural season, National Pro Fastpitch has taken another important step forward from the drawing board toward the diamond. Along the way NPF has remained committed to the league vision of providing opportunities for players and fans of fastpitch for years to come.

In selecting the NPF Affiliate Teams for 2004 the league considered many factors, including the suitability of the market and reaction of potential fans, the availability of quality ballparks, and the experience and financial wherewithal of candidate team owners. In turn candidate NPF team owners evaluated the league with several important criteria to determine whether the time was right to join in 2004. The result of this process led to the decision to launch as a six-team, rather than as an eight-team league as had been anticipated over the last several months.

The six teams within National Pro Fastpitch are making every effort to provide opportunities for players from the rosters of the Colorado Altitude and San Antonio Armadillos. To that end, a supplemental draft was held on March 30, 2004 in which the draft rights for college seniors and elite draft picks previously held by the Altitude and Armadillos were reassigned to one of the six official 2004 teams. For players that were part of the Elite Draft, their draft rights were reassigned for a period of two weeks (through April 15, 2004). If an Elite Draft player is not signed to an official team roster by that date, they will become a free agent. For players selected in the Senior Draft, they will be permitted to pursue any available roster spot on their assigned team after completing their college season. Senior draft rights expire July 15, 2004.
