LOWELL, Ma. – The New England Riptide opened their 2008 home stand against the Venezuelan Olympic team tonight. Both teams had opportunities to win, with New England leaving 13 runners on base, but eventually the Riptide earned a 5-4 win in eleven innings.
The Riptide got on the board in the bottom of the first off Venezuelan pitcher Mariangee Bogado. Shanel Scott led off the inning with an infield single that trickled by Bogado. Scott immediately stole second on the next pitch. Scott later scored on a single to left by Lisa Iancin.
Venezuela got it back in the third on a single by Jineth Pimental, followed by a double by Maria Soto. The Riptide took the lead in the bottom of the fourth, 2-1, on KJ Kelley’s RBI single, which was set up by a single and stolen base by Lisa Modglin.
Venezuela came back with two of their own in the fifth to take a 3-2 lead. With one out, a throwing error by Iancin put a runner at second. A walk to Soto followed by a double by Yusmari Perez scored the runs. Eileen Canney came in to relieve Beach and struck out Soto to end the threat.
The Riptide evened the score at three all in the sixth and there it stayed through the seventh, eighth, and ninth despite many threats by the Riptide. Neither team was able to score in the tenth despite the international tie-breaker rule. In the eleventh Venezuela scored their runner.
The Riptide scored theirs quickly. With Carrie Embree on second, Scott bunted and the ball was thrown into right field. Embree scored but Scott was out trying to stretch to third base. The Riptide kept plugging. Martin singled and stole second. After an intentional walk to Lyndsey Angus, Iancin became the hero of the game getting her third hit of the night to score Martin giving the Riptide a 5-4 victory.
Beached pitched well for the Riptide, allowing three runs, two earned and striking out eight. Canney was just as good in picking up her third win of the year, also striking out eight and allowing no earned runs on four hits in 5.1 innings.
The teams continue the series on Friday and Saturday at 7:05 and finish the series on Sunday at 5:05. All games are at Martin Softball Field.
