Akron, OH – June 12, 2014
-It may be the start of their inaugural season, but the history remains the same as the Pennsylvania Rebellion, presented by The Coury Financial Group, and the Akron Racers exchanged in their own “Battle of the Border” on Thursday at Firestone Stadium. However, Akron escaped with a 6-1 victory over Pennsylvania in the first game of a four game series.

In the bottom of the first inning, Akron was the first team to strike as shortstop Nerissa Myers powered her second homerun of the year, a two-run shot, to put the Racers ahead 2-0. Racers’ third baseman Kelly Montalvo drove in the third and fourth run of the inning with a two-run single for a 4-0 lead.

The Racers’ lead grew to 6-0 in the second with a RBI sacrifice fly by centerfielder Taylor Schlopy and Myers second homerun of the night, her third of the year.

Outfielder Angeline Quiocho accounted for Pennsylvania’s only score of the contest as she blasted a solo home run over the left field fence in the fifth inning.

Defensively, centerfielder Samantha Garcia robbed Akron’s right fielder Jennifer Gilbert of two hits on the night as the former South Carolina Gamecock made two spectacular diving catches in the game.

Rebellion starter Sarah Pauly was tagged with the loss for Pennsylvania as Akron starter Alison Owen earned the win and teammate Lannah Campbell picked up the save.
