Daytona Beach, Florida— The Cleveland Comets notched their 2nd victory of a 4-game series with the Beijing Shougang Eagles on Friday. Fantastic pitching from starter Sierra Hyland (7 IP, 2 H, 8 K) was the difference maker that held the Eagles scoreless in a complete game shutout.

The Park Planet Player of the Game went to Hyland who played her collegiate softball at Cal Poly. Hyland win is her first victory of the season making her 1-2 in the 2019 NPF season. Hyland held the Eagles struggling lineup to only 2 hits and frustrated the Eagles batters all night long.

Eagles’ starter Chai Yinan (5 IP, 4 ER, 2 BB) was bounced from the game when she ran into trouble in the top of the 5th inning surrendering 3 runs to the Comets. Victoria Vidales RBI single started the rally scoring Jade Rhodes. Lilli Piper’s RBI single busted the game open when Sammy Marshall and Anissa Urtez crossed the plate to extend the Comet lead to 5-0. The Comets added one more run the top of the 7th when former Auburn Tiger, Emily Carosone, grounded into a fielder’s choice that score her teammate Victoria Vidales (1 R, 2 H, 1 RBI)

The Beijing Shougang Eagles are a women’s professional softball team. Established in May 2017, the team began play in the National Pro Fastpitch (NPF) during the 2017 season. Managed by Chinese Softball Association, the Eagles’ roster is mainly populated with players from the China women’s national softball team as a means to gain professional experience against the highest levels of fastpitch play, in anticipation of softball’s return to the Olympics in 2020.
