Carolina Diamonds Sweep the Akron Racers

The Carolina Diamonds swept the Akron Racers on Monday behind a stout 3 hit pitching performance from Katie Burkhart and a 6th inning offensive explosion.

A first inning home run from Diamond’s first baseman GiOnna DiSalvatore provided all the offense necessary for the Diamonds to get the win. However, the offense went above and beyond the call to provide run support. The rally started in the 6th inning with a Kelsi Weseman single followed by 2 singles and a double from Natalie Villarreal to push the lead to 5-1. The offensive onslaught would not stop there and Carolina added 4 more runs in the inning to secure the first series sweep in franchise history. The Diamonds also moved into sole possession of 3rd place in the NPF standings with the win.

The lone run for the Akron Racers came in the 3rd inning when Sharonda McDonald scored on a wild pitch from Burkhart. Akron Starter Kristina Thorson allowed only 2 runs through the 5th inning but  all the breaks seemed to go Carolina’s way in the 6th and Thorson was pulled with 1 out in the inning. Thorson took the loss for Akron, dropping her to 3-3 on the year. Burkhart dazzled in the circle tonight, going the distance, striking out 9 en route to her 4th victory of the season.
