Elgin – Runners were on first and third in the top of the sixth when Canada’s Jennifer Salling cranked an RBI single to centerfield, breaking the three inning tie with the Bandits (4-7), putting Canada up 2-1.
With only six hits between the two teams, it became somewhat of a pitcher’s duel between Canada’s Danielle Lawrie and Chicago starter Kristina Thorson (0-4) until the top of the sixth when Canada’s bats heated up.
Canada took the lead after the top of the sixth, 3-1, and didn’t give it up, beating the Bandits after seven innings of well played ball.
Chicago third baseman Stacy May stepped into the box in the bottom of the first as the lead off hitter for the Bandits. On the first pitch of the bottom half, she cranked a solo shot over the right field fence, giving the Bandits a 1-0 lead.
Thorson, on the mound to start for the Bandits, got two quick outs to start the first, then gave up a double to Jennifer Yee as she sent one to left field on a rope. The threat ended however, when Bandits’ shortstop Jaime Clark made an inning ending catch in shallow centerfield.
In the bottom of the third, Bandits’ rookie Mindy Cowles flashed her speed by stealing third after coming in as a pinch runner. She was left stranded however, as the next two Bandits’ struck out to end the inning.
The Canadian Olympic Team added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth, and the Bandits headed into the bottom of the seventh down two runs.
With a runner on first, the Bandits were unable to bring her around, losing 3-1 to the Canadian National Team.
Thorson pitched five and a third innings in the loss, giving up just three hits while striking out one and walking four. Tracie Adix stepped into the circle as a relief pitcher in the top of the sixth, putting in one and two third innings of work with one strikeout, no walks and one hit.
Canada’s Danielle Lawrie was solid on the mound for the Canadians, throwing seven innings while giving up two hits, one run (May’s HR), and four walks. Of the 28 Bandits’ batters she faced, ten were shown the bench via strikeouts.
