Daytona Beach, Florida (July 29, 2019)—The Chicago Bandits and Beijing Shougang Eagles played two games Monday night at Jackie Robinson Ballpark but only one team came away happy. The Chicago Bandits full of power and pitching prevailed in both game 1 and game 2 to earn their third and fourth straight wins against Beijing.
Game 1 was headlined by a tremendous performance from former Florida Gator Aleshia Ocasio and former Utah Utes star Hannah Flippen. Ocasio who was one allowed hit away from a perfect game threw seven scoreless innings with six strikeouts. Hannah Flippen was also dominant at the plate going 2 for 3 with 3 RBI’s and one monstrous homerun in top of the 3rd inning. Flippen was selected as the Rip-it Player of the Game. The Bandits won the opener 6-0.
Game 2 seemed to get off to a great start for the Eagles when they took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning from a Xu Jia RBI fielder’s choice that scored Chen Jia after she reached on a single. Eagles ace Wang Lan kept the Bandits scoreless until the fourth inning when the Bandits scored three runs to take the lead. The lead was taken back in one swing by Abbey Cheek that was a three-run blast. Caleigh Clifton and Brenna Moss scored via Cheek’s longball.
Abbey Cheek was named the Rip-it Player of the Game after her 3 RBI performance that included a triple as well as her homer. Starter Rachele Fico went 4.o innings allowing 1 earned runs and 3 strikeouts. Savannah Heebner pitched 2 scoreless innings tallying 2 strikeouts and Paige Lowry finished out the game striking out 2 0f 3.
The Eagles will have another doubleheader tomorrow starting at 3:05pm EST against the Chicago Bandits. Game 2 of the doubleheader will at 6:35pm EST as the USSSA Pride make the trip up to Daytona Beach. The Beijing Shougang Eagles are a women’s professional softball team. Established in May 2017, the team began play in the National Pro Fastpitch (NPF) during the 2017 season. Managed by Chinese Softball Association, the Eagles’ roster is mainly populated with players from the China women’s national softball team as a means to gain professional experience against the highest levels of fastpitch play, in anticipation of softball’s return to the Olympics in 2020.
