Akron, OH — One of the most decorated athletes in Illinois State history has added professional fastpitch player to her resume of achievements. Shannon Nicholson, a 5’7’ pitcher from Glenwood, Illinois, was named both the Illinois State Female Athlete of the Year and the Scholar Athlete of the Year in 2007. Shannon will head to Akron, OH in early May to begin what she hopes to be another banner year for her as a member of the Racers.
Nicholson led the Redbirds with 21 wins and a 1.53 ERA in her senior season at ISU. She is just the second player in Redbird history to earn Easton Second-Team All-American honors. She earned All-Missouri Valley First-Team accolades for the first time in her career after returning from a torn ACL just 12 games later to post a remarkable 10-5 record.
Nicholson’s career numbers includes a 62-33 mark in 627 innings pitched. She tossed 17 shutouts and collected 362 strikeouts.
General Manager, Joey Arrietta was very pleased with the acquisition of Nicholson. “I’ve known her coach Melinda Fisher since my days as a college coach and when she says she is something special then I’m convinced she will be a great addition to our program. I am not looking for her to overpower our opponents but I believe she has the skill to keep the ball in the park and let our defense go to work. At this level you must have a solid work ethic to be successful. Shannon is that kind of athlete.”
