Smith and Thorson Melt the Ice

Allentown, Pa. - Kristina Thorson pitched a complete game one-hitter, and catcher Ashley Smith drove in the game’s lone run in the bottom of the eighth inning to give the Philadelphia Force a 1-0 victory over the visiting Michigan Ice. With the win, the Force improved their record to 20-17 with 7 games remaining in the regular season.

On a sweltering evening at ECTB Stadium in front of 224 fans, Thorson (12-4) started the game by retiring the first 17 Ice batters she faced. First baseman Kim Biskup broke up the perfect game bid with the lone hit for the Ice with two outs in the sixth inning. Thorson would punch out 12 Ice batters on the evening and lower her ERA to 0.88.

Offensively for the Force, they banged eight hits off of Megan Brown. Seven different players had hits for Force, with Chelsea Spencer getting two hits in the game. The Force posted threats in the first and second innings, but could not come up with the key hit.

Well, not until the eighth inning. Spencer started the winning rally with a single through the left side. Trena Peel beat out a bunt for a single. Kellie Wilkerson moved the runners up a base with a groundout to the right side of the pitcher’s mound. Megan McAllister was given a four-pitch “unintentional intentional walk” to load the bases. Ashley Smith then drove the first pitch she saw from Brown sharply off of the glove of the third baseman and into left field to score Spencer and give the Force the win.

The Force and Ice play two tomorrow. First game is scheduled for 1:05 p.m., and another game is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
