Force Erase Racers

Akron, Ohio - Kristina Thorson pitched a complete-game shutout and the Philadelphia Force pounded out 11 hits to compile a 5-0 victory over the host Akron Racers. First baseman Kellie Wilkerson and right fielder Trena Peel both were on base four times, each going 3-for-3 with a hit by pitch, to lead the attack for the Force.

Thorson was again excellent in the circle. She allowed just two hits on the evening and struck out five. With the shutout, Thorson lowered her ERA to 1.05, good for third in the NPF. She improved her record to 10 wins against four losses on the season.

The Force (16-17) scored their first run in the fifth inning. Third baseman Clare Burnum started the inning with a base on balls. Two sacrifice bunts placed her on third, and she scored on an error by Racers third baseman Norrelle Dickson of a Sharonda McDonald ground ball.

In the seventh, the Force would break the game open off of Racers pitcher Radara McHugh (7-6). With two outs, McDonald, who had singled earlier in the game, would reach base again on a Racers fielding error. Shortstop Chelsea Spencer, who had two of the Force hits, followed with a two-run shot down the left-field line. The home run was her fifth of the season and her 13th RBI. Designated player Jenna Hall continued the rally with a single to right center. Wilkerson would complete the scoring by driving a McHugh offering over the right-field fence for a two-run dinger, her fourth of the year.

Catcher Ashley Smith had the other Force base hit on the night.

The Force and Racers (18-11) meet up again on Thursday night at Firestone Stadium. Game time is set for 7:05 p.m.
