LOWELL, Ma.- Tonights second game between the Michigan Ice and the New England Riptide would feature the pitching match up of Ashley Hamby against Eileen Canney, who was coming off a complete game shut out of the Philadelphia Force last week.
It figured to be a pitchers duel and each pitcher pitched a gem of a game for the first five innings holding each other to no runs on two hits.
It was in the sixth that things fell apart for Hamby as the Riptide sent 13 batters to the plate and scored seven runs to walk away with a 7-0 victory. As has happened so may times before, the inning began with Shanel Scott putting down and beating out a perfect bunt. On the next pitch to Garland Cooper, Scott stole second and did not so much as draw a throw from catcher Miranda Ervin. The steal was her league leading 21st of the year.
Cooper eventually drew a walk and then the hit parade began. Lyndsey Angus a single, Gina Carbonatto a double, Lisa Iancin, Jess Merchant, Shanel Scott again, and Garland Cooper a single before the inning mercifully ended for the Ice.
Canney completed her second straight shut out, this time allowing three hits, one walk and struck out nine to improve her record to 5-2 on the year.
The Riptide look to extend their winning streak to four on Friday night at Martin Softball Field at 7:05 against the Ice and finish the series on Saturday, also at 7:05.
