Lowell, Ma. -- The Riptide scored three runs in the first at Martin Softball Field against the Michigan Ice and looked like they were going to run away with it, however the Michigan Ice tied it in the third with three of their own. It remained that way until the Riptide pushed the winning run over in the bottom of the sixth to win the game 4-3.
The Riptide got on the board in the bottom of the first when Shanel Scott singled to center and promptly stole her 22nd base of the season. She quickly scored when Carri Leto Martin also singled to left center. Lyndsey Angus walked after fouling off a number of Keli Harrel pitches. Both runners advanced one base on a wild pitch right before Garland Cooper singled scoring both runners, her 8th and 9th RBIs of the year to give the Riptide a 3-0 lead after one. The Ice tied it up in the third after they began the inning with consecutive singles by Kim Biskup and Charity Butler. A walk to Meagan Pettipiece loaded the bases for the top of the order. The Riptide looked like they might have gotten out of it when Becky Manson hit back to Beach who got the force at home. Beach then struck out Lani Shaffer for the second out, but the first pitch to Ariel Jenkins was hit over the head of left fielder Shanel Scott for a bases clearing double to tie the score at 3-3. The Ice just missed taking the lead and would have if not for a perfect throw to home to catch Jenkins by center fielder Gina Carbonatto after Miranda Ervin singled.
In the fourth with one out, Riptide starter Erica Beach began to experience some of the back twinges that have been bothering her over the last two weeks and was relieved by the eventual winner, Danielle Henderson (5-3). Henderson ended the fourth quickly, but ran into trouble in the fifth on a throwing error and an infield hit to put runners at first and third with one out. Henderson got out of it brilliantly though, striking out Jenkins and getting Miranda Ervin to ground out to Jackie Pasquerella at third. Henderson pitched well for the rest of the game striking out four and walking one to pick up her fifth win against five losses.
The Riptide won it in the sixth when Gina Carbonatto (2 for 3) singled and was pinch run for by Lisa Modglin. Modglin stole second and Jess Merchant walked. After KJ Kelley popped up, Tarrah Beyster won the game, pinch hitting for Pasquerella, singling to center to drive in Modglin. It was Beysters second game winning hit in this series.
The Riptide and Ice play the final game of the series Saturday night at Martin Softball Field at 7:05 with the Riptide looking to complete the sweep. It will be Safety Night at Martin Softball Field as representatives from the Molly Bish Center will be on hand to hand out safety kits to all those under 14 attending.
