Wolfe Fans Twelve, Heat Win 9-2

Game Box Score

TUCSON, ARIZ – The Arizona Heat took their second consecutive game against the Southern California Hurricane, but this time in different fashion. The Heat fell behind in the fourth before a big two-out rally in the bottom of the inning turned the game around. Leslie Wolfe picked up her sixth win of the season, striking out 12 in a complete game.

Wolfe took the mound for the 17th time this season, and threw her fifth complete game of the season. She allowed just the two runs and struck out a Heat record 12 batters on the night. Mayumi Murakami took the mound for the Hurricane, lasting only four innings and surrendering seven runs. Gabby Guerrero finished off the game, giving up…..

The Heat did not duplicate their first inning explosion from the night before, but did get on the board first. With the game moving into the bottom of the third scoreless, Crystal Farley got things started. She led off the inning with a double to left and advanced to third on a single by Autumn Champion. Farley and Champion executed a perfect double steal with Farley scoring the first run of the game.

Southern California answered back in the top of the fourth, loading the bases with two singles and a hit batter. With two down, Brianna Goad delivered a two run single to right field, putting the Hurricane up 2-1.

Arizona would not waste anytime getting the lead back; scoring four runs in the bottom half of the fourth. April Valdez started the rally with a two-out double before moving to third on a bunt single by Farley. LaDonia Hughes ripped a single to left, scoring Valdez and tying the game. Catalina Morris followed with her fifth triple of the season, scoring two more. She would score on Champion’s single, pushing the Heat lead to 5-2.

The Heat would score two more in the fifth with a RBI double by Toni Mascarenas and a sacrifice fly by Valdez. Nichole Thompson added a RBI double in the seventh, extending her franchise record hitting streak to eleven games. Wolfe would strike out the side in the seventh to put the game away.

Autumn Champion once again picked up three hits, improving to six for six on the series. She also added two more stolen bases, improving her league leading total to 14. Crystal Farley contributed two hits and two steals while Catalina Morris drove in a pair of runs.

Brianna Goad once again led the Hurricane offense, picking up a pair of hits and RBIs. Sam Banister added two hits of her own on the night.

Leslie Wolfe and Nichole Thompson each set franchise records on the night. Wolfe’s 12 strikeouts broke Dana Sorensen’s record of 11 which was set on opening day last season. Thompson’s sixth inning double extended her hitting streak to 11 games, breaking the record of 10 held by Catalina Morris and Cheryl Schaefer.

The Heat and Hurricanes square off again tomorrow night for the third game of the series. The game will start at 7 pm at Hi Corbett Field.
