Osterman No-Hits Heat, USA Sweeps Series

Game Box Score

TUCSON, ARIZ – The Arizona Heat fell for the fourth straight game to Team USA thanks largely to the pitching of Cat Osterman and the hitting of Jessica Mendoza. Osterman threw a no-hitter while striking out 12. Mendoza delivered two hits including a grand slam in the fifth to bust the game wide open.

The Heat countered Osterman with Leslie Wolfe. Wolfe lasted two innings, giving up one run on three hits. Desiree Serrano relieved her to start the third and retired the first seven batters she faced. Serrano got into trouble in the fifth and was replaced by Celena Velasquez after allowing five runs in the inning. Velasquez and April Valdez finished off the game for the Heat.

Team USA got off to an early lead for the fourth straight game, courtesy of Jenny Topping’s solo homerun to lead off the second. The Heat could not get anything going offensively of Osterman who struck out eight of the first nine batters she faced.

The National Team pulled away in the fifth, scoring their second run on a RBI single by Natasha Watley. After an infield single by Caitlin Lowe loaded the bases, Mendoza jumped on the first pitch and crushed a grand slam.

The top of the sixth was much of the same, with Team USA adding five more runs on six hits, a walk and an error. Amanda Freed, Jenny Topping and Laura Berg were responsible for driving in the runs.

Osterman continued to mow down the Heat batters, retiring the last 18 batters she faced. Her only blemish on the night was a first inning walk to Kaleo Eldredge.

Team USA added another run in the seventh on an error to close out the scoring on the night and ending the game 12-0.

Kaleo Eldredge was only Heat batter to reach base on the night, drawing her league leading fourteenth walk of the season.

Jessica Mendoza led the USA offense, picking up two hits including a grand slam and driving in five runs. Jenny Topping connected on two hits of her own including a solo homerun. Laura Berg contributed three hits and Vicky Galindo added two of her own.

The Heat are home again next week for a four game series with the Dominican Republic at Hi Corbett Field. The series will begin Thursday at 7 pm and conclude Sunday.
