USA Takes Second Game to Sweep Doubleheader

TUCSON, ARIZ – The Arizona Heat could not rebound in the second game doubleheader versus Team USA, dropping the game 10-3. Natasha Watley led the USA offense delivering two hits including a homerun and driving in five. Catalina Morris belted a three-run homerun in the fourth to pull the Heat within one run, but that was as close as it would get.

Desiree Serrano got her second start of the series, this time facing off with Jamie Southern. Serrano would only last one and two-thirds innings after allowing four runs. Leslie Wolfe finished off the second getting out of a bases loaded jam. Wolfe threw two and two-thirds innings on the night, surrendering three runs. April Valdez finished off the game for the Heat allowing three runs in her two and two-thirds innings. Southern picked up the win for Team USA, going four innings and giving up three runs. Cat Osterman and Amanda Freed close out the game with three scoreless innings in relief.

Team USA got started early on, scoring four runs in the top of the second on only two hits. Serrano allowed the first run after hitting Laura Berg with the bases loaded. Natasha Watley followed with a sacrifice fly before Jessica Mendoza’s two run single made it 4-0.

The game moved into the bottom of the fourth stuck at 4-0, but the Heat would strike back. Toni Mascarenas led off the inning with a double to left and Nichole Thompson walked to put two runners on. With two outs in the inning, Catalina Morris smashed a Southern offering over the left field wall pulling the Heat within one run.

Andrea Duran answered back in the top of the fifth with a two-run homerun making the score 6-3. Team USA would add two more runs in the inning on a double by Watley. Watley would be heard from again, crushing a two-run homerun in the top of the seventh making the final score 10-3.

Catalina Morris was the hitting star on the night for Heat. She delivered two hits including a three-run homerun. Autumn Champion picked up her third hit of the night after singling twice in the first game. LaDonia Hughes, Crystal Farley and Toni Mascarenas also had one hit apiece.

Natasha Watley paced the USA attack, driving in five runs on a homerun and a double. Jessica Mendoza and Andrea Duran drove in a pair of runs each, with Duran’s RBIs coming courtesy of a two-run homerun. Tairia Flowers also added two hits in the game.

The Heat and Team USA will square play the final game of the series tomorrow night at 7 pm at Hi Corbett Field.
