ROSEMONT, Ill. (October 5, 2017) The Chicago Bandits have agreed to a one-year deal with right-handed pitcher Sierra Hyland, team officials announced on Thursday afternoon.

Hyland, a 2016 first round selection out of Cal Poly, finished her rookie campaign 1-2 in the circle and paired it with a respectable 3.57 ERA. The Visalia, California resident logged 15.2 innings of work after making her debut against the Texas Charge on June 16, 2017.

"Being a Bandit taught me that no matter how much you think you may know about the game, you can always learn and better yourself every single day," Hyland said. "Through coaches, teammates and most importantly, yourself, there is the never ending opportunity to grow your knowledge for the game."

Hyland secured her first career victory in a 5-4 win over the Beijing Shougang Eagles on Aug. 1 after she allowed one run over three innings. The Big West Conference’s all-time strikeout leader posted a career-high 4.1 inning effort in her final start of the season against the USSSA Pride on Aug. 13.

A four-time NFCA All-Region selection while at Cal Poly, Hyland became the Mustangs’ first player selected to the professional ranks since Melissa Pura in 2009. She lowered her season-ERA in each of her six appearances as a rookie and held right-handed batters to a team-best .105 clip at the plate.

“We were impressed with Sierra’s development as a rookie and are looking forward to seeing her contribute in the circle again in 2018,” Bandits general manager Toni Calmeyn said.

Although she did not record a plate appearance during the 2017 season, Hyland showcased her prowess on the offensive end throughout her collegiate career. In addition to her 23-12 record and 0.97 ERA in the circle, the right-hander made a significant contribution at the plate as a senior, batting .331 with a pair of home runs and 36 RBI.

The four-time Cowles Cup champion Chicago Bandits will be back at The Ballpark at Rosemont for the 2018 season. For more information about the Chicago Bandits or to reserve your season tickets, please visit chicagobandits.com or call the box office at 877-722-6348.
