MIAMI, FL (July 8, 2017) — The Charge split a pair of contests Saturday in Miami, Florida against the Beijing Eagles and USSSA Pride.
Playing at Florida International University, Texas (12-14) scored a 1-0 shutout win versus Beijing before falling 8-2 to USSSA in the nightcap.
The victory featured yet another gem delivered by Charge right-hander Dallas Escobedo. The Arizona State alum struck out a game-high 14 batters and allowed five hits in the victory.
The lone run of the ballgame came courtesy of Renada Davis, who used a two-out single to left field to bring in teammate Mysha Sataraka. Texas’ Koral Costa finished 2 for 3 in the triumph.
The Eagles’ Lan Wang took the tough defeat after giving up just four hits in her six innings of work.
The Charge looked to take their newfound momentum into the second game of the day against the Pride, but a seven-run fifth inning by USSSA spoiled Texas’ shot at taking down National Pro Fastpitch’s top team.
Nadia Taylor gave the Charge a 2-0 edge in the top of the second by launching a two-run home run. The blast also plated Alisa Goler, who was acquired Thursday in a trade with the Scrap Yard Dawgs that sent both Amanda Kamekona and Katiyana Mauga to Houston.
The Pride responded by notching a run in the bottom of the second and then erupting for seven runs in the fifth to build a commanding lead.
USSSA received two RBIs apiece from Chelsea Goodacre and Shelby Pendley, and one from Kelly Kretschman on a bases-loaded walk. Courtney Ceo and Megan Wiggins each scored on wild pitches.
Brittany Mack-Oakes took the loss for Texas after tossing four innings and allowing five runs on six hits. Emily Vincent and Jill Compton each worked one inning in relief.
Kelsey Nunley earned the “W” for the Pride. The starter went six frames and struck out six while surrendering two runs on three hits.
Texas will look to rebound today when it faces the Pride at 6:05 p.m. at Florida International University.
