AKRON, Ohio Right fielder Trena Peel hit her fifth home run of the season to help the Akron Racers to a 3-2 victory over the Arizona Heat on Friday night at Firestone Stadium. Peels fifth blast of the year came on a solo shot in the fourth inning, tying the game at 2-2.
The Racers dug out of an early hole, falling behind in the top of the first when Heat right fielder Wendy Allen sent a two-run double down the left-field line to set the score at 2-0.
Akron responded in the bottom of the first inning when shortstop Kristin Johnson reached on a fielders choice and moved around to third on an error. With one down, catcher Dana Degen dropped a single into center field to plate Johnson and reduce the deficit to one run.
In the fourth inning, Peel evened the score when she took Arizona pitcher Tarrah Beysters offering deep over the right field fence. With the homer, Peel is now tied for the league lead in home runs and is also first with 26 RBIs.
The Racers took the lead in the fifth inning when centerfielder Iyhia McMichael doubled down the left-field line and moved to third on Johnsons soft double into right-center. National Pro Fastpitch Player of the Week, designated player Nikki Myers put her team ahead with a single through the right side of the infield, scoring McMichael and giving the Racers the 3-2 win.
Despite surrendering two early runs, Racers starter Radara McHugh settled in the later innings as she allowed only two hits in a complete game effort. McHugh earned her 11th win of the season while helping the Racers improve to 37-17.
The Racers and Heat conclude their four-game series with a doubleheader at Firestone Stadium tomorrow, with game times at 1:05 p.m. and 4:05 p.m. Saturday is also Akron Racers Fan Appreciation Day, featuring merchandise and prize-give aways, special promotions, and the drawing for the Great Racers Raffle during the nightcap.
