Akron, OH, June 14—The Pennsylvania Rebellion and Akron Racers battled the elements all weekend, with Sunday’s doubleheader being no exception. The Rebellion was able to take game one of the twin bill and was working on a 3-0 lead before another rainstorm covered Firestone Stadium forcing another postponement.
In game one of the Sunday doubleheader, the Rebellion combined for 11 hits tying a franchise single game record, en route to their 7-3 victory. PA was able to capitalize on a rough start from Akron starting pitcher Aimee Creger, scoring two runs in the top of the first.
In the top of the second, third baseman Lara Andrews connected with a 1-0 pitch to send her first career home run over the left field wall to give the Rebellion a 3-0 lead. Andrews picked up her second RBI of the contest later in the fifth, plating pinch runner Whitney Arion. Second baseman Cheyenne Cordes and catcher Kristyn Sandberg also scored in the at bat, pushing the PA lead to six runs.
After PA brought in another run in the sixth, Akron ended the shutout nod in the latter half of the inning when designated player Jessica Garcia notched a two-run homer off of reliever Emily Weiman. Akron added one more run in the bottom of the seventh thanks to an RBI single from catcher Haley Outon, but the Rebellion were able to halt the late-inning heroics to secure their fourth win of the season.
An extensive rain delay prolonged the break between games one and two, but after both teams returned to play, the Rebellion offense picked right back up against Akron starter Hannah Campbell. In just three innings, PA tallied four hits, including home runs from Sandberg and first baseman Alisa Goler for a 3-0 lead.
Defensively, Emma Johnson shined in the circle for the Rebellion, retiring seven straight Racers until a final rain delay was called, eventually resulting in game two being postponed until a later date.
The Rebellion will travel next to Texas when they pay a visit to the Dallas Charge for a three-game series beginning on Wednesday, June 17. Fans can stay up to date with the Rebellion play-by-play by tuning into and/or follow the team on Twitter via @PaRebellion.
