Akron Racers Fall to Chicago Bandits 8-0

Akron, OH– June 29, 2013
– Chicago dominated the Racers opening weekend leaving Akron winless with one game yet to be completed after the June 28 game was halted. Veteran pitcher Lisa Norris faced off against Monica Abbott in the circle for a showdown of ace pitchers. The Racers and Bandits mirrored each other in the first inning, both failing to get on the board. Jessica Garcia made a sound catch in the outfield, and the Bandits’ Abbott pitched a scoreless first inning.
The Racers continued to experience inconsistency with their defense throughout the 8-0 loss. Garcia hit a single bringing excitement into the second inning, and Kelley Montalvo followed with a huge slam to center field.
In the top of third, Schlopy continued to show why she is one of the best defenders in the league and caught a huge blast from Megan Wiggins in center field. The Bandits left the Racers defenseless when Nerissa Myers brought Alisa Goler home with a home run, taking the total runs to four. Norris finished the inning strong for the Racers and struck out Amber Patton. Abbott kept the Racers at bay and pitched another scoreless inning.
Norris started the fourth inning by saving a soft line drive inches from the ground. Charlotte Morgan followed with her fourth great save at first base. Montalvo and Morgan made a great pair with a relay from third to first base for the first out in the bottom of the fifth.
The Bandits had a busy sixth inning, scoring the majority of their runs. They scored three runs, including their second home run of the night, pushing their lead to 5-0. Fico replaced Norris and consecutively pitched the two outs needed to conclude the inning.
An assortment of missed opportunities by the Racers in the seventh inning allowed the Bandits to earn three more runs. Abbott finished with a three-hit shutout.
