Henderson to join Heat

TUCSON, Ariz. – In an attempt to climb into contention for the postseason, the Arizona Heat have acquired right-hander Danielle Henderson from the Akron Racers in exchange for a 2005 and 2006 second round draft pick.

Henderson, from Commack, N.Y., was on the 2000 U.S. Olympic Gold Medal Team that competed in Sydney, Australia and was a three-time All-American at the University of Massachusetts. She currently holds 25 school records at UMass and was the first female athlete in school history to have her jersey retired.

In 1999, she received the Honda Award, given annually to the nation’s top softball player. In the same year, she set an NCAA record for consecutive scoreless innings of 105 (Mar. 16 – May 2). She also posted a 26-game win streak (Feb. 27 – May 21), seventh best in NCAA history ,a career 0.70 ERA, 72 shutouts, 135 complete games, 14 no-hitters and three perfect games.

Henderson’s college stats rank her in the top 20 in nearly every category including career strikeouts (1,343, 5th all-time), wins (108, 17th all-time) and strikeout ratio (9.6, 6th all-time), along with innings, starts, complete games and shutouts.

Henderson was inducted into the New England Women’s Sports Hall of Fame and captured gold with the U.S. National Team at the Pan-Am games and the Canada Cup.

She was 4-1 with the Racers, with a 1.92 ERA and 48 strikeouts in 48.2 innings.

She joins the Arizona Heat who are tied for last place at 10-24 along with the California Sunbirds in the six-team National Pro Fastpitch (NPF) league.
