AKRON, Ohio – The Akron Racers took game three of four from the California Sunbirds 3-1 at Firestone Stadium on Tuesday night. The Racers rallied in the fifth inning with two runs to overcome a 1-0 deficit. The Racers are now securely in first place in the league with a 2.5 game lead.

After falling behind 1-0 in the third inning, the Racers got on the board in the bottom half of the fifth inning when Akron native third baseman Tracee McCoy legged out an infield single and moved to second on a fielder's choice. National Pro Fastpitch (NPF) all-star second baseman Brandi Stuart blasted her fourth double of the season to bring in McCoy and knot the score at one.

Designated player Heather Wright continued the two-out rally as she skied a double deep over the head of California’s left fielder to bring in Stuart and give the Racers the 2-1 edge. Wright’s game-winning hit was named the Summa Health Care System Play of the Game.

The Racers added an insurance run in the home half of the sixth when NPF all-star catcher Jenn Poore drew her second walk of the night. Poore moved to second on an error and took third on Kristin Johnson’s sacrifice bunt to put herself into scoring position for right fielder Trena Peel. With two down, Peel knocked a run-scoring single to put the Racers on top 3-1. The RBI was Peel’s 12th overall and her fifth in two days.

Poore was one-for-one with two walks and a run scored, earning her the Custom Sports Imprints Player of the Game award. Poore also gunned down two Sunbirds attempting to steal second.

Brandee McArthur worked her third complete game of the season, allowing only one run while scattering seven hits. McArthur also struck out seven, giving her 33 K's on the season.

Akron goes for the series sweep of California tomorrow evening as it hosts the Sunbirds at 7:05 p.m. at Firestone Stadium. The Racers own the 5-0 season advantage over the Sunbirds and have out-scored them 32-3. For more information, call 330-376-8188 or log on to
