Lowell, Mass. - The New England Riptide lost to the first-place Texas Thunder today at Martin Field, despite a no-hit performance by Riptide pitcher Leigh Ann Ellis.

Ellis (2-5) retired the first 12 batters she faced, until she hit Thunder cleanup hitter Claire Burnum to lead off the fifth inning. After Peaches James popped out to second Selena Collins drew a walk. On the second pitch to Marissa Young Burnum stole third and scored on a perfectly executed squeeze.

That was the only offense Texas would need as the Riptide had chances, but were not able to push a run across and the game ended at 1-0.

The Riptide had chances in the fourth when Shrewsbury native, Lyndsey Angus doubled to left and then again in the sixth when LaDonia Hughes led off the inning with a single and advanced to second on a Nichole Thompson sacrifice. But in both innings New England failed to come up with key hits off Texas pitcher Peaches James (6-1).

Ellis' no-hitter was the second of the season in the league, as Thunder ace, Christa Williams pitched a no-hitter in a June 18 win against the Arizona Heat.

The Riptide continue the series with Texas tomorrow and Sunday, both games at 1:05. Dana Sorensen is expected to start tomorrow, with Jocelyn Forest finishing the series on Sunday.
