Force Blanked by the Glory

By:
Allentown, Pa. - Sarah Pauly and Jen Musillo combined on a five-hit shutout to give the visiting Washington Glory (5-2) an 8-0 victory over the Philadelphia Force (1-2) in National Pro Fastpitch league action. Winning pitcher Pauly (3-1) held the Force offense in check, and struck out five in five innings of work. Musillo pitched the final two innings for the Glory.

The Glory opened the scoring in the second inning. Third basemen Sara Larquier led of the inning by reaching on a two-base error by left fielder Stacy Birk. Second baseman Nicole Thompson followed with a blast over the right field fence to give the Glory a 2-0 lead. The Glory have homered in all three games of the series and it was the fourth consecutive game with a home run for the team.

Washington would pad their lead in the fifth inning. Left fielder LaDonia Hughes led off the frame with a single. She advanced to third when Force third baseman Megan McAllister threw Amber Jackson’s sacrifice bunt attempt wide of first, and the ball went out of play. Hughes would end up at third, and Jackson standing on second. After an Oli Keohohou groundout to the pitcher that did not advance the runners, Larquier (2-for-4, 3 RBIs) singled to drive in Hughes. Jackson was caught rounding third base for the first out of the inning while Larquier moved up to second base. Next batter, Thompson, singled in Larquier to make the score 4-0 for the Glory.

The Force had Pauly in trouble in two different innings.

In the first inning, shortstop Chelsea Spencer continued her solid hitting by laying down a bunt single. After a Trena Peel sacrifice, designated player Kellie Wilkerson, and left fielder Stacy Birk both were walked to load the bases. But Pauly pitched out of the jam by striking out first baseman Jenna Hall and third baseman McAllister.

Spencer (2-for-3) again started off a Force inning by knocking a single. With one out, Wilkerson drew one of her three walks on the night. Again Pauly escaped trouble by getting Birk on strikes and Hall on a fly out to center field.

The Glory added on two more runs in the sixth inning off of Margo Pruis, making her NPF debut. Pruis retired the first two batters, but the she yielded a single to center fielder Kelly Kretschman. The next three batters would draw walks to force in a run. Meagan Hennessy replaced Pruis, and gave up a single to Larquier, scoring Hughes.

Jen Chamberlin finished the scoring for the Glory by hitting a pinch-hit, two-run home run in the seventh inning.

The Force attempt to earn a series split tomorrow afternoon at ECTB Stadium with the first pitch scheduled for 1:05 p.m.
