The Arizona Heat once again feasted on the Phoenix Flames pitching, slugging 19 hits on their was to a season-high 17 run outburst, winning 17-3. Lauren Bauer and Jackie Coburn did their share of damage, combining for nine hits and nine RBIs on the night. Erica Beach overcame a shaky start to pitch five strong innings, and once again, Randi Nielson and Toni Mascarenas relieved the Heat starter.
Beach started for the fourth consecutive game, allowing only one run on seven hits and striking out six Flames. Nielson came in and tossed her tenth scoreless inning of the series and Mascarenas finished off the game but allowed two runs.
The Flames started the scoring off in the first, scoring their first run of the series thanks to singles by Jackie Vasquez, Samantha Quintaro and Desiree Williams. Williams single to right field scored Vasquez and gave the Flames a 1-0 lead.
The Heat did not allow the Flames to hold onto the lead for very long, with Lauren Bauer leading off the game with a single to right. Jessica Mendoza followed with a walk and promptly stole second. Two batters later, Stacey Nuveman drove both runners in with a single to left field, giving her ten RBIs on the series and the Heat a 2-1 lead. Later in the inning, Jackie Coburn singled home a run and the Heat led 3-1 after one inning.
The Heat offense was back at it in the third; putting four more runs on the board. After getting the first two batters to fly out, Flames pitcher Desiree Williams gave up back to back homeruns to Jackie Coburn and Phelan Wright. Cheryl Schaefer followed with a walk, and Lauren Bauer doubled her home to stretch the Heat lead to 6-1. Mendoza followed with a RBI single and the inning ended with the Heat leading by six.
It did not get any easier for the Flames in the fourth as the Heat put another four runs across the plate. Nuveman and Flowers led off the inning with back to back walks. After a run scored on an error, Williams walked Wright and gave up an RBI single to Schaefer. With the bases loaded, Bauer singled home two runs to push the Heat lead to 11-1.
The Heat added another run in the fifth on a sacrifice fly by Phelan Wright. They followed that up with a five run sixth, capped off with a three run homerun by Jackie Coburn. The homerun was Coburns second of the game and put the Heat up 17-1. The Flames were able to add two runs in the seventh on a two run homerun by Jessica Ellison.
Lauren Bauer finished the night five for five, with three runs, three RBIs, two doubles and a stolen base. She has now hit safely in nine consecutive at-bats, and is eleven for twelve on the series. Jackie Coburn added four hits, two of which were homeruns and drove in a Heat season high six runs. Jessica Mendoza had two hits and two stolen bases, while pushing her team leading RBI total to 19. Tairia Flowers had three hits and scored four times on the night.
The Heat and Flames will face off again tomorrow night for the series finale, with the Heat looking for the sweep. The game will be at 7:30 at Hi Corbett Field
