AKRON, OH – July 13, 2013 - Unlike any other team in National Pro Fastpich, the Akron Racers remain perfect against the NY/NJ Comets.
In their seven previous meetings, the Racers outscored the Comets 51-12, but Akron didn’t stop there. The Racers put their power on display, dominating the first-year franchise in a 9-0 shutout Saturday.
The Racers utilized the long ball in the victory, sending out three home runs, two off the bat of rookie Brigette Del Ponte. The recent Arizona alumna had another powerful performance for the Racers, blasting her third and fourth home runs in three consecutive games.
Del Ponte put the Racers on the board first with a solo shot in the third inning, but the home run only began the Racer’s rally. Aja Paculba followed Del Ponte with a single off the glove of Kelsey Weseman then Karino squeezed in a bunt single, putting two on for Taylor Schlopy. Schlopy sent out a three-run shot against Comets’ starter Taryne Mowatt, giving the Racers a 4-0 advantage.
While the Racers’ starting pitcher Rachele Fico continued to keep the Comets at bay, the rookie received plenty of run support. Akron added five more runs in the fourth inning, two again at the hand of Del Ponte. Tess Sito led off the inning taking a pitch off her back. Del Ponte made Mowatt pay for the error, hitting her fifth career home run over the center field wall.
Paculba and Karino added back-to-back singles for the Racers, then a passed ball and a throwing error allowed one more run to score. Mowatt then walked Morgan, loading the bases for Sam Marder. The 2012 NPF Offensive Player of the Year sent an RBI single through the left side, giving the Racers the 9-0 lead.
Fico allowed just three hits through her five innings of work, allowing the Racers to continue their four-game win streak. Erin Arevalo earned the save for the Racers, throwing two scoreless innings. The Racers will attempt to complete a five-game sweep of the Comets at 2:05 p.m. Sunday at Firestone Stadium.
-Brigette Del Ponte went 2-3 at the plate with two home runs and three RBI.
-Rachele Fico threw a three-hit shutout for her second career win.
