Mejia and NPF Diamonds Take Game Two

By:
Diamonds top Racers

AKRON, Ohio – Rookie shortstop Bianca Mejia had a career day to power the NPF Diamonds to an 8-2 victory over the host Akron Racers on Friday night.

Mejia went 3-for-4 with three runs, two RBIs and a home run and started the Diamonds (2-0) scoring in the top of the first inning.  The Long Island University alum hit a one-out single to centerfield, then came around on the same play after Racer (0-2) center fielder Lisa Modglin had the ball go through her legs and shortstop Courtney Bures threw the relay throw into the third base dugout.

Akron left fielder Taylor Schlopy answered with her first career hit – a homerun to center – to tie the game 1-1.

The Diamonds would eventually build a 3-1 lead through four innings with RBI base hits by Angeline Quiocho and Brittany McKinney.

Midway through the top of the fifth inning, lightning began to roll past Firestone Stadium, forcing the game into a 40-minute delay.  The Diamonds came out of the recess ready to go, with Mejia and leadoff hitter Kristin Schnake already on first and second base, respectively, Diamond starting pitcher Megan Gibson walked to load the bases with one out.  Loryn Johnson followed with a two-run single that scored Mejia and Gibson to give the Diamonds a 5-2 advantage after five innings.

Quiocho and Mejia both blasted home runs to give the Diamonds three more runs in the sixth inning and close out the scoring.  Quiocho's blast ended the day of Akron starter Kristina Thorson.

The Racers were led in the defeat by Schlopy (3-4, home run) and catcher Roya St. Clair (2-3, run).

Akron will once again welcome the Diamonds to Firestone Stadium on Saturday evening at 7:05 for the third game in this four game series.
