Diamonds get an Extra Inning Win

Diamonds win 1-0 in 10th on bunt by Johnson

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (June 13, 2010) _ One bunt can make a difference in a game,

That is exactly what happened for the Tennessee Diamonds as a bunt to the third base side by Loryn Johnson scored Aubree Brattin in the 10th for a 1-0 win Sunday afternoon to close out the first series for the franchise.

The heat index on the field at Draper Diamond on the campus of Lipscomb University was more than 100 degrees when the game began. By the time it ended the sky was threatening stormy weather.

It was the first extra innings game in Diamonds history.

Abbott, 2-0 on the season, has thrown 27 shutout innings since joining the Diamonds. She struck out 14 and did not walk a batter.

The Racers threatened in the fifth with two outs as Courtney Bures hit a fly ball to deep center for a double. She advanced to third when Jessica Valis reached base on a bunt single. Abbott forced Lisa Modglin to ground out to third to get out of the jam.

The Diamonds had hits in the second, third, fourth, fifth and eighth innings, but could not force a run across a run until the 10th.

Shannon Doepking paced the Diamonds with two singles.

Valis led the Racers with two hits, both singles.

Right-hander Jamee Juarez went the distance for the Racers. She gave up seven hits, walked one and struck out six in 9.1 innings.

The Diamonds ended their first series of the season with a 2-3 record. The Racers are 3-2 after the first series.

The next series for the Diamonds begins Friday night when the Florida-based USSSA Pride, featuring eight former Olympic players, visits for four games.
