Racers Power Past Force in Game One

ALLENTOWN, Pa. - Looking to pick up a crucial win, the Force hosted the Akron Racers in game one of the five game series Wednesday evening at ECTB Stadium in front of a crowd of 391 fans. With a three run home run in the top of the fifth by Crystl Bustos, the Racers downed the Force by the final score of 9-3.

Wednesday’s tough loss dropped the Force’s record to 3-12 on the year, while the Racers improved to 9-7 overall.

Bustos who went 2-for-4 on the night with three RBI’s changed the momentum of the game in the fifth when she gave her team a 5-3 lead. Prior to Bustos’ homer, the Force actually held a one run lead (3-2) going into the fifth frame. Helping out Bustos at the plate were Lisa Modglin and Jackie Pasquerella. The duo combined for five hits in six at-bats and had four RBI’s and six runs scored respectively.

Helping the Force to their early lead was ace righty Megan Gibson. Gibson who threw five innings Wednesday night recorded her fourth home run of the year in the bottom of the second, tying the game at 1-1. In the circle Gibson surrendered six runs on eight hits and fanned three batters.

Also helping the Force in the early innings were Audrey LaFountain and Clare Burnum. Both players picked up an RBI in the bottom half of the third to put the Force up 3-2. LaFountain’s RBI came one a triple to right center, while Burnum picked up her sixth RBI of the season on a single through the right side.

Back in the circle Akron pitcher Angela Tincher went 3 2/3 innings with four strikeouts. Kate Robinson went the remaining 3 1/3 innings and led the game with six strikeouts. Robinson earned the win Wednesday night, improving her record to 2-1 overall.

The scoreless draw did not last long Wednesday night as the Racers jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top half of the first. Gibson then evened the score at 1-1 in the second. Akron put their second run of the night on the board in the top of the third.

Philly took their first and only lead of the night in the bottom half of the third on the back-to-back RBI’s by LaFountain and Burnum. Unfortunately, Bustos distinguished the Force spark in the top of the fifth with her three run shot. Akron would close out the top of the fifth with a total of four runs to go up 6-3. They then added to their lead in the sixth with three more runs to solidify the 9-3 decision.

The Force will look to get back on the winning path tomorrow evening when they take on the Racers in game two of the series at ECTB Stadium. Start time is scheduled for 7:35 p.m. EST and can be viewed live on the internet by visiting
