ROCKFORD, Ill. - The Rockford Thunder (16-22) mounted a seventh inning rally that scored two and saw five hitters reach base, but came up just short against the New England Riptide (18-20) on Tuesday.
Amanda Williams had three hits on the night, and Tonya Callahan drove in two runs in her two-hit performance. Several other Thunder hitters had good nights, as production came from throughout the lineup.
Rockford fell behind early in the game, as five runs crossed the plate in the first four innings for the Riptide. Those runs included a two-run blast by catcher KJ Kelley.
The Thunder scored two runs in two separate innings. In the bottom of the second, Lindsay Gardner and Kristen Zaleski reached base with no outs. Shanna Diller drove Gardner in with a light dribbler through the infield. Zaleski came around to score on a groundout by Audrey Rendon.
They came on strong again in the bottom of the seventh. Down four runs, five straight Rockford hitters reached base. The two runs crossed the plate off of Callahan's bat, when she doubled to right-center field.
Serena Settlemier (2-9) took the loss for the Thunder, giving up five earned runs over 4+ innings. Cassidy Scoggins and Megan Brown combined for 2.2 innings of scoreless relief for Rockford. Erica Beach (2-5) earned the win for New England.
The two teams will meet two more times this week, including Wednesday at 6:35 pm. These games will be played at Players Park in Roscoe.
