Akron and Rockford reverse roles; Racers win 5-0

By:
ROCKFORD, Ill. - A day after taking the opening game of the current series 5-0, the Thunder (13-17) fell by that same score Thursday. The Racers (15-15) were fueled by three doubles by leadoff hitter Veronica Wootson, and solid pitching by Angel Shamblin.

Box Score

The Thunder made solid contact with the ball all afternoon, only striking out twice, but could not drive runners in, stranding nine runners and batting 0-for-9 with runners in scoring position. Rockford had runners reach base in six of the seven innings.

Akron first scored in the top of the second inning, as Wootson drove two runners in with her second double of the afternoon. Wootson later came around to score off of a Thunder error. The Racers' other runs came off of leadoff home runs by Kate Robinson and Kristen Butler in the third and fifth innings, respectively.

Rockford mounted rallies in several innings, getting runners on first and second in the first, second, third and fourth innings, but could not get a runner as far as third in the contest.

Thunder batters had six hits in the game, including two each from outfielders Erin Evans and Amanda Williams. The offense also got singles from Lindsay Gardner and Tonya Callahan. Serena Settlemier (1-7) gave up four earned runs over five innings to take the loss for Rockford. Cassidy Scoggins came into the game and pitched two scoreless innings to close the game out.

The Racers' Angel Shamblin (3-4) pitched a complete game shutout for the Racers. She gave up six hits and walked two, while striking out two more.

The two teams will play a night game Friday at 6:35 pm at Players Park. Tickets are just $5 and can be purchased at the gate. Either Megan Brown (3-1, 2.94 ERA) or Allison Kime (6-4, 2.77 ERA) will take the mound for Rockford, and Jamee Juarez (0-3, 5.56 ERA) is set to pitch for Akron.
