Modglin, Riptide escape Akron with 3-2 win

By:
AKRON, Ohio — The New England Riptide completed their spoiling of the Akron Racers’ Tenth Anniversary celebration on Saturday night as they won the four game series against the Racers (12-12) after coming out on top in yet another one run game, 3-2.

There just wasn’t enough scoring for Racer ace Angela Tincher, who threw a complete game. She was great through the first six innings, scattering just two hits, but she wasn’t able to hold it together in the seventh as the Riptide (13-15) were able to rally for the win.

In the top of the seventh inning, things fell apart for the Racers. Riptide shortstop, Jessica Merchant, started the inning with a walk. The free pass was made possible when first baseman Kate Robinson dropped a routine foul ball that extended the at bat. Following a strikeout, Gina Carbonatto bunted her way aboard to put runners on the corner with one out.

Then came Tincher’s one mistake of the game, Outfielder Lisa Modglin completed the rally and put the Riptide in front of the Racers with one swing of the bat. She sent the ball over the leftfield fence for a three run homerun that put the Tide in front 3-2 for good.

Akron got all of their runs on one swing of the bat as well. The bottom of the third inning started when Kellie Middleton reached base when pitcher Jocelyn Forest badly bobbled a ball hit to her. After Middleton stole second base, Angelena Mexicano followed suit on a single down the third baseline that put runners on first and second with no outs. Both Middleton and Mexicano moved up one base on a sacrifice bunt by India Chiles. With runners on second and third and
one out, Veronica Wootson stepped up and ripped a double to leftfield to score both Middleton and Mexicano. The double jumped the Racers out to what looked to be a solid 2-0 lead in this pitcher’s duel.

Jocelyn Forest (5-6) started for the Riptide and threw six innings, giving up just two runs on four hits. Eileen Canney came on in the bottom of the seventh to finish the game for the Tide, and pick up her league leading second save, by setting the Racers down in order.

Tincher (7-4) picked up the tough loss, allowing two earned runs on five hits and a pair of walks while striking out nine.

This was the last game of the Racers’ five-week home stand, but they will be in action at New England starting next Wednesday at 7:05 pm.

The Racers will return home on July 22 to face the USA Olympic Team during the Bound 4 Beijing Tour. The game will air on ESPN2.
