Akron, OH – August 5, 2014 – The Akron Racers took the field tonight looking to move back to .500, for the first time since July 5th. With ace Rachele Fico in the circle, the Racers knew they would have as good a chance as any to get the win.

“Fico has been a workhorse for us all year,” said Racers Field Manager Brian Levin. “Any time you put her in there, you know you’re going to be in the game. That’s all we can ask from our pitching staff.”

Fico held the Rebellion scoreless through three innings, while the Racers bats gave the ace plenty of run support. In the second inning, Ashley Thomas and Ayumi Karino singled off of Rebellion starter Tatum Edwards, before Jill Barrett’s RBI single plated Thomas.

They would add to the lead in the third inning, when Charlotte Morgan walked and Olivia Watkins entered the game to pinch run. After Jessica Garcia reached on an error by Rebellion shortstop Kourtney Salvarola, Kelley Montalvo walked to load the bases. Thomas then beat out a bunt which allowed Watkins to score. A fielding error by Mandy Ogle allowed Karino to reach third on her single, and drove in Montalvo and Thomas.

That ended Edwards’ night, as she threw 2.2 innings and allowed 6 runs on 6 hits, walking 3 and striking out 3 Racers hitters. Sarah Pauly entered the game in relief, but didn’t fare much better in the inning for the Rebellion. She allowed an RBI single to Jill Barrett which drove in Karino, and after Barrett stole second, surrendered a 2 run home run to Nerissa Myers. Pauly would complete the game for the Rebellion, throwing 3.1 innings and allowing 2 runs on 4 hits.

The seven run inning would be more than enough for the Racers, with Fico in the circle. Her only runs on the night came in the 4th inning, by way of a two run home run to Lauren Lappin, following a walk to Ogle. Fico threw 4 innings and allowed 2 runs on 5 hits, while walking 1 and striking out 2.

Hannah Campbell entered the game for the Racers in the 5th inning to record the save. She allowed only one run on a solo homerun to Briana Hamilton in the top of the 7th. In her three innings of work, she allowed only 2 hits and struck out 1.

The Racers return to Firestone Stadium on August 7th through the 10th for their final home series of the season against the USSSA Pride. For more information about the Akron Racers or to order tickets, visit www.akronracers.org or call (330) 376-8188.
