Racers Bats Not Dampened by Rain, Win 5-0 Over Rebellion

Akron, OH – August 2, 2014 – With rain in the area all day, the Akron Racers weren’t sure they would get to play today. But, after a one hour delay, they took the field looking to pick things up where they left off yesterday, after beating the Rebellion 15-0.

“We’ve had to battle weather a few times this season, so it’s not anything we’re not used to,” said starting pitcher Rachele Fico. “We just know to stay ready and keep our minds in the right spot, and everything worked out in our favor tonight.”

Fico was dominant in the circle tonight, leaving the Rebellion hitless until the fifth inning. She earned the complete game shutout win, allowing only 3 hits, while walking 3 and striking out 3 Rebellion batters.

The Racers bats remained explosive, as Nerissa Myers singled up the middle of the infield and Charlotte Morgan gave the Racers the early lead with a two run home run off of Rebellion starter Anna Miller.

Those were the only two runs the Racers would need, but they extended the lead in the fourth inning. Jessica Garcia led off with a stand up double, Taylor Schlopy walked and Ashley Thomas sent a ball over the left field fence for the Racers’ second home run of the game. That would end Miller’s night in the circle. She threw 3.2 innings, allowed 5 runs on 5 hits, walked 1 and struck out 3 Racers hitters.

Tatum Edwards finished the game for the Rebellion, throwing the final 2.1 innings, allowing no runs on 2 hits, walking none and striking out 3.

In the fifth inning, Schlopy helped Fico preserve the shutout, once again showing her defensive skills in centerfield. For the second night in a row, she made a diving catch to rob Brittney Lindley of a home run. Tonight’s potential 3-run home run would have ended the shutout for Fico, but could have changed the entire outcome of the game.

“I just try to focus on the next pitch and try to hit my spots and let my defense work,” said Fico of the defensive displays tonight. “They played phenomenally behind me tonight, especially Taylor.”

The Racers return to Firestone Stadium on August 4th and 5th against the Rebellion. Both games will be televised live on CBS Sports Network. Go to link and find the channel For more information about the Akron Racers or to order tickets, visit or call (330) 376-8188.
